Ed Oldfield, the pint-sized political blogger, updates us on the current same-sex marriage debate in the UK.
Under the 1997-2010 Labour government, Britain famously evolved into what is meant to be a hugely fair and equal society. But is it? The Coalition Government has caused scandal suggesting that Gay Marriage ought to be legalised. Whilst a good majority of the public believes that it should be, there have been vicars who have argued very strongly against it. In my opinion these Vicars are ridiculously unequal. Marriage is the union of two people who love each other; surely this principle still applies for the LGBT community? Some could argue that if the LGBT community was granted the right to have Civil Partnerships why not go the whole hog and allow LGBT marriages. Of course, the old fashioned church may ban the right to hold services. This is discrimination and the Government should take every step to ensure Gay Marriages can happen in churches.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, last week resigned the day after the Government announced that it was seeking to legalise gay marriage, this shows that he is no Moderniser. He previously stated his view on LGBT marriages here.
The favourite to succeed him is Dr. John Sentamu, who not only does not believe in gay marriage, but also goes one step further and believes that Women priests should not be ordained. Although Tony Blair clearly did a lot for making the Commons more equal, David Cameron needs to pick up where he left of and modernise the church.
So if you live in the UK and are in favour of the British government passing same-sex marriage, please consider signing the Coalition for Equal Marriage.
