Throughout this month we have been posting updates daily. Thus far, we’ve realised educational activities, new logos, blogs and news articles. Today, we bring you poetry!
Yes, poetry. Although it sounds silly, this poem creatively expresses the need for occasions like LGBT History Month. It also provides a thinking point for educators: how else can we get students to engage with educational events? Creativity often allows a much greater emotional expression, and thus today, day six, we bring you a poem and accompanying activity for educators and students.
Legal rights are a necessity,
Globally, they need to
Be recognised.
Transcending race, colour or creed.
History gives us knowledge:
Information is power.
Strong nations remember their past,
They are triumphant in the future.
Our world has hope if we
Remember what has come before.
You’ve got to have hope.
Momentous is this movement,
Optimism is our greatest asset.
Never will we give up.
Though we look to the future,
History will always be behind us.
For educators and students:
Read the above acrostic poem about LGBT History Month. Consider what the meaning of LGBT History Month is and why it’s so important to celebrate it. What would life be like if we did not look to the past? As the Spanish philosopher, George Santayana, famously said, “Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.”
Write an acrostic poem, similar to the one above, explaining why it is so important to celebrate and engage in events like LGBT History Month.
